Wimax is a new technology which solves many of the problems with the older mobile internet access technologies. It provides the same high speeds of broadband but offers the benefits of wireless technology, which makes it less expensive than DSL and cable.

It is also easier to extend Wimax coverage because it offers the wide coverage of a cell phone network rather than the limited coverage of WiFi hotpots. Wimax stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, and it's also known as 802.16 by the IEEE. Wimax can revolutionize broadband internet access in much the same way that cell phones have led many people to abandon their landlines. Wimax could easily replace DSL or cable internet access services because it offers the convenience of universal access almost anywhere you can get a cell signal.

Sequans is a 4G chipmaker which creates the Wimax chips that power 4 new HTC devices in the US and Korean markets. The HTC EVO 4G+ and the HTC Flyer 4G tablet in Korea were launched last month, whith the HTC EVO 3D and HTC View 4G in the US were launched in the US from Sprint.

The new devices offer the cutting edge capabilities of Android OS along with Sequans' 4G Wimax, which is an industry-leading integrated semiconductor solution. Specifically the SQN1210 chip is optimized for mobile devices, and delivers both baseband and triple band RF on a die. This reduces power consumption and increases performance at a lower cost than competing technologies. These advanced features allow for faster browsing and better playback and streaming of media. Sequan's patented technology significantly improves wireless performance and coverage.

Most of the buzz in the mobile market has been on LTE, but the facts are that Sprint has added more Wimax customers in the last quarter than Verizon has added in LTE subscribers.

Most of the 1.7 million new Wimax subscribers were wholesaled from Clearwire, but this compares to 1.2 million LTE subscriber added by Verizon. Yet most media outlets fail to report on comparisons like this which show that Wimax is still leading the market in the US. Instead, they focus on stories about carriers like Clearwire shifting away from Wimax towards LTE. It's strange that pundits are predicting the death of Wimax when in fact it is still a leading technology with high growth rates.. Not only was Wimax the market leading 4G technology in the US, it is now one of the only technologies still offered with no data caps by Sprint.
